A BASIC GUIDE TO WINDOW INSERTS AND FULL-FRAME WINDOWS

While window installation is a common home improvement project, not a lot of people know how technical things can get when putting a fresh set of windows in their home. Homeowners usually have to choose between window inserts and full-frame windows. How are these two options different from each other? Let’s take a quick look at both of them to find out.

A Basic Guide To Window Inserts And Full Frame Windows

Window Inserts

Window inserts are fully functioning windows that are – as their name implies – inserted into pre-existing window frames. This means a window insert only consists of the sash (the operable part of the window). Since window inserts do not come with the frame, they are usually cheaper than their full-frame counterparts.

Full-Frame Windows

Full-frame windows are basically window inserts that come with their own matching frame. They do not need a pre-existing frame in the wall before they can be installed, but they also tend to be more expensive than inserts. However, the matching frame and sash make them the more energy-efficient windows.

Which Is Better?

Which option is better depends on the main goal of the installation. If you are just planning to replace an old window with a relatively intact frame, then a window insert is the more practical option. However, if the old window’s frames are already too deteriorated to function, you should get a full-frame window.

Cosmetics also play a big role in determining which option is better. For example, modern casement windows will look awkward on a traditional window frame, so you’re better off with full frame window replacements. On the other hand, window inserts are fine if you’re just planning to switch from a classic casement window to another type of classic-themed window with similar dimensions.

"We recently contracted with Renewal by Andersen to replace 5 windows in our home. First of all, we were very delighted that the time from contract to installation was less than two months. Joel and Craig arrived precisely at the agreed-upon time and spent less than four hours from start to completion of installation, including time to demonstrate opening/closing the windows and any questions we had. We were very pleased with the knowledge and professionalism of Joel and Craig, and, of course, we’re very pleased with the windows and how nice they look. We definitely recommend Renewal by Andersen."
