Four Ways to Effectively Soundproof Your Home

Noise, whether it’s coming from a blaring television in your living room or from the neighbor’s dog barking outside, disturbs your peace and quiet. You spend a lot of time at home so you want it to be a place where you can relax.

Four Ways to Effectively Soundproof Your Home

In this post, your local home remodeling expert, Renewal by Andersen® of St. Louis, discusses ways you can block outdoor and ambient indoor noise.

1.  Use Soft Materials to Control Sound

Hard surfaces like hardwood, tile and laminates reflect sound waves. Soft materials absorb sound so it’s a good idea to have them in your home. You can reduce unwanted sounds with acoustic ceilings, padded carpets or rugs. Sound-blocking curtains can also minimize outdoor noise, but they don’t completely block it.

2. Minimize Indoor Noise

Background noise like loud appliances from your own home can also disturb your neighbors. Consider soundproofing your laundry area with foam insulation. The two loudest appliances in a home are the dryer and washing machine.

Turn off appliances that are not in use to reduce sound even just a little, especially in open or shared spaces like the living room. Check your appliances for unusual buzzing or vibrations, and make sure they are working properly.

3. Soundproof Doors

Doors with a hollow construction filled with air don’t do a great job at blocking noise. Particleboard-core, composite-core or solid doors create an effective sound barrier. Aside from their soundproofing qualities, these doors are available in a wide range of designs. There are also doors that are specially crafted to block sound.

4. Weatherstrip Doors

Sound can pass around the door. Weatherstrip your door in the jambs to seal gaps. Replacing your hollow door with a solid one and weatherstripping the perimeter are very effective ways to block sound.

"Very pleased with installation of six windows and a ProVia entry door. I love the look of the windows and door. I am pleased that my wife is thrilled with the look of the door. She is very pleased that the bronze color fits in well with the color of the brick."

"I just had my Renewal by Andersen windows installed and couldn’t be happier, the entire process went very smoothly. The windows are high quality and look great. But the installers Roy, Zack and Jordan were the stars, they introduced themselves upon arrival walked me thru everything they were going to do and when they finished took me to each window to make sure I was completely satisfied. They were clean and courteous and I would definitely recommend and have them work in my home again."

"Wonderful experience with knowledgeable, competent employees. We had Andersen windows in a previous house & didn’t even consider anything else this time. After replacing our patio door almost two years ago, we replaced all our windows this year. What a difference over builder-grade windows, especially in the really cold temperatures we’ve had this year. Andersen windows may be a little more expensive than other brands, but they are top quality."
