Things to Consider Before Buying Bay Windows

Bay windows can increase your property value. They add extra square footage to your home, not to mention improving the natural lighting inside and making it seem more spacious. However, to make the most of a bay window, you’ll need to take into account a few factors before installing one.

The Size of the Window

As mentioned earlier, one of the most attractive features of bay windows is the extra space and the natural lighting they provide so it would be a good idea to maximize these as much as possible. Plus, a bigger window can give a better view.

Keep in mind that heat from the sun or the cold from the outside can easily enter your home through a wide glass pane. To lower your power costs and maximize your returns on investment, we recommend installing energy-efficient windows.

The Type of Sash

You’ll have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a sash for your window; it’s mostly just a matter of preference. As a general rule, it’d be better if the sashes match the other windows in your home, but there are exceptions. For example, a casement sash would be better suited to taller, narrower bay windows while a double-hung sash would be a better fit for shorter windows.

Structural Support for the Window

Bay windows protrude out from your home, which is why installing them requires a lot of modifications to the structure. For structural support, you can install either braces or support cables. The former provides support from below the window while the latter provides it from above. If you’re particular about your curb appeal, we recommend choosing the latter; support cables are hidden in the window frame.

Like we mentioned earlier, bay windows are difficult to install so you need to make sure your installer is qualified. You can vet them faster by checking their certifications.

"We recently contracted with Renewal by Andersen to replace 5 windows in our home. First of all, we were very delighted that the time from contract to installation was less than two months. Joel and Craig arrived precisely at the agreed-upon time and spent less than four hours from start to completion of installation, including time to demonstrate opening/closing the windows and any questions we had. We were very pleased with the knowledge and professionalism of Joel and Craig, and, of course, we’re very pleased with the windows and how nice they look. We definitely recommend Renewal by Andersen."
