Are Strong Winds Dangerous for Replacement Windows?

Today, all replacement windows and doors are designed to weather almost anything Mother Nature can throw at them. Glass panels can withstand mild to moderate impact from hail, frame seals and gaskets help keep rainwater on only one side of the window, and the whole unit is built to be affected as little as possible by exposure to the sun.

Are Strong Winds Dangerous For Replacement Windows

But how do replacement windows fare against high winds? Are there any specific window problems that are directly related to strong gusts of air?

A Typical Day in the Life of a Window

Multi-pane replacement windows are so-named because they have two or more panes of glass. This is important for energy efficiency reasons mainly because of the insulating gas trapped between these panels. During the day, as heat from the sun hits your windows, this gas expands, causing a slight increase in internal pressure between the insulated glass IG) units. Window manufacturers anticipate this and have included seals that keep the gas from escaping even under pressure.

Moisture Is a Factor

In addition to heat, moisture can also find its way into the internal structure of your windows, which is why most windows contain a small amount of desiccant to absorb any penetrating moisture. Over time, this desiccant can become saturated, and, eventually, the moisture reaches the seals that keep the gas between the panes. This process is slow and takes years.

The Straw That Breaks the Camel’s Back

When moisture affects the seals, the pressure building up from the sun’s heat can put your window in a risky position. This happens near the end of the life of your windows, and it’s the time to finally call your windows company for a replacement. With all these factors combined, a strong gust of wind can be the straw that finally breaks the camel’s back, so to speak. It’s usually at this point where winds can cause problems in aging windows.

"Very pleased with installation of six windows and a ProVia entry door. I love the look of the windows and door. I am pleased that my wife is thrilled with the look of the door. She is very pleased that the bronze color fits in well with the color of the brick."

"I just had my Renewal by Andersen windows installed and couldn’t be happier, the entire process went very smoothly. The windows are high quality and look great. But the installers Roy, Zack and Jordan were the stars, they introduced themselves upon arrival walked me thru everything they were going to do and when they finished took me to each window to make sure I was completely satisfied. They were clean and courteous and I would definitely recommend and have them work in my home again."

"Wonderful experience with knowledgeable, competent employees. We had Andersen windows in a previous house & didn’t even consider anything else this time. After replacing our patio door almost two years ago, we replaced all our windows this year. What a difference over builder-grade windows, especially in the really cold temperatures we’ve had this year. Andersen windows may be a little more expensive than other brands, but they are top quality."
