Choosing the Right Window Type and Size for Your Home

When buying new windows, there are many things to consider. Some homeowners take the time to choose the ideal style and design that will fit their home. Another important thing you should consider is the window size. The size of your windows will depend on how you want your home to look from the outside as well as from the inside.

Choosing the Right Window

Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows are the most common type of windows in the United States. They have a wide variety of size choices to fit any rough opening. Since they are one of the versatile window types, they can be used anywhere in your home, such as the bedroom, kitchen and hallways, among other places. Double-hung window width can be anywhere from 24 to 48 inches while the height can range from 36 to 72 inches.

Picture Windows

Picture windows are usually for those who want to allow more sunlight into their homes. Designed for architectural appeal, most of these windows don’t open so they can be built in a wide variety of sizes. Picture windows can also be installed in the living room, kitchen and more. There are a lot of options you can choose from, from small to large aesthetic windows. For most standard picture windows, the common width can be from two to eight feet. As for the height, it can range from one to eight feet tall.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows can be found in the bedroom, bathroom, basement, kitchen, or other parts of your home. Keep in mind that these windows are wider than they are tall. If your window dimensions fit into this range, you might want to choose this type for your replacement windows. That way, you can have them installed without needing to change your rough opening. Sliding window horizontal width can be 36 to 84 inches, while the height can be 24 to 60 inches.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are very different from your standard window. They can open up your space and bring more light and beauty into your home. By adding one bay window, you can enhance your home’s entire space and beauty at the same time. For the right home, bay windows can be a worthy investment. The width of standard bay windows can be 3 feet 6 inches to 10 feet 6 inches, whereas the height can be 3 feet to 6 feet 6 inches. If you want something larger, you might want to consider custom sizes for bay windows.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged windows that can be opened from the side. If you reside in warm areas where you usually rely on outdoor air for ventilation, casement windows may be a great choice for you. As such, they are much better for ventilation purposes than double- or single-hung windows. For most casement windows, the width can range from 1 foot 2 inches to 2 feet 11.5 inches, and the height range from 2 feet 5.5 inches to a maximum of 6 feet 5.5 inches.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are hinged at the top and can be opened outward. This allows for more comfortable ventilation. Not only are these windows easy to open and close, but they are also often used with other window styles. During a light rain, you might want to keep them open since they are also considered weatherproof. The width of awning windows is available from 2 feet to 3 feet 10 inches while the height is usually 1 foot 8 inches to 7 feet 8 inches.

Custom Size Windows

If you cannot choose the right window type that can fit into the rough openings of your home, you might want to consider ordering custom windows through your local windows company. You’ll have to give your window measurements to an associate and decide on your preferred frame material and glass. While dealing with custom windows is more time-consuming, you will have windows that are specifically made for your home.

"We recently contracted with Renewal by Andersen to replace 5 windows in our home. First of all, we were very delighted that the time from contract to installation was less than two months. Joel and Craig arrived precisely at the agreed-upon time and spent less than four hours from start to completion of installation, including time to demonstrate opening/closing the windows and any questions we had. We were very pleased with the knowledge and professionalism of Joel and Craig, and, of course, we’re very pleased with the windows and how nice they look. We definitely recommend Renewal by Andersen."
