How to Inspect Windows for Storm Damage

Windows are second only to roofs when it comes to sustaining damage from a summer storm. They should, nevertheless, receive the same care and should be inspected for damage. In this blog, Renewal by Andersen® of St. Louis shares a quick guide on how to inspect your windows after a summer storm.

Check the Area for Hazards

Before you perform window inspections, make sure the storm has passed. Check the immediate environment outside your home, and keep an eye out for downed power lines, flooding and other hazards, such as fallen trees and heavy debris. Stay indoors, and call 911, especially if you find live wires near your home.

Check Your Windows for Damage

There are three types of damage for which you should keep an eye out:

  1. Wind Damage – High wind speeds can uproot trees and heavy pieces of debris. It’s not impossible for windows as well as patio doors to get damaged from high winds. Keep an eye out for shattered glass, and make sure it’s swept away before you let your family go about the house.

  2. Impact or Hail Damage – Hailstones can cause about the same amount of damage as high winds, but, sometimes, it can be more subtle. Inspect the window exteriors for cracked glazing and dented trim. The same damage may extend to the siding.

  3. Water Damage – Wind may drive water to the windows, which can put the weather seals on your windows to the test. If your windows have double-pane glass, look out for condensation between panes as this indicates a broken window seal. The space between the frame and sashes should be dry; if not, rainwater may have penetrated the window. Also, keep an eye out for other signs of water damage in the house, such as water stains, warped trim and sagging floorboards.

After Inspection

If you have not called your insurance provider, do so. It’s generally a good idea to take pictures of the damage before you start cleaning up, especially if you need to clear hazards like broken glass. Once you have confirmed an appointment with an insurance adjuster, you need a licensed window replacement company to provide an estimate of the window repair or replacement costs. Both documentation and estimate are needed to file your insurance claim. The sooner they’re received by your insurance provider, the more likely your claim will be processed on time.
