5 Ways to Finance Your Window Replacement Project

Whether you’re getting a set of new windows, patio doors or a complete home remodel, you will need to secure funding for it. If you don’t have immediate funds available, there are several ways you can pay for your project.

  1. Cash — Cash remains the best financing option since there are no further obligations once you have paid upon completion. It is also the most difficult option as saving up for a project can take years. When choosing cash as a payment option, be wary of contractors who ask for full payment upfront. A legitimate window company will ask for a downpayment, followed by one or two installments after milestones like delivery of materials, culminating in a final payment upon successful completion.

  1. Credit Card — Credit card payments are good for projects that cost $15,000 and lower. In addition being payable in one or two years, and may even make you eligible for zero-interest payment plans. Many homeowners prefer using their credit card for small to medium projects, such as getting new French doors.

  1. Personal or Unsecured Loan — Personal or unsecured loans do not require collateral (hence, “unsecured”), but the loan amount can be limited, up to $50,000. The qualification process is easy, and the payment period can usually be set to an affordable monthly rate. However, this type of loan tends to have the highest interest rates. Personal or unsecured loans can usually cover the cost of window replacement for an average-sized home.

  1. Secured Loans — Secured loans require collateral, which, in most cases, is the home itself. If you plan on undertaking remodeling projects that cost more than $50,000, this is your best option. There are three types of secured loans: cash-out refinance (recomputing your existing mortgage, which puts it back to square one), home equity loans or home equity loan (HEL) (basically like taking a second mortgage on your home, payable in as short as 15 years), and home equity line of credit or HELOC (which is like HEL, but with a revolving line of credit).

  1. Contractor Financing — Not all window replacement companies offer project financing, but those who do use trusted financing partners as lenders. For many homeowners, contractor financing is a great option for projects on short notice or if you are anticipating unplanned repairs during window installation.

"We recently contracted with Renewal by Andersen to replace 5 windows in our home. First of all, we were very delighted that the time from contract to installation was less than two months. Joel and Craig arrived precisely at the agreed-upon time and spent less than four hours from start to completion of installation, including time to demonstrate opening/closing the windows and any questions we had. We were very pleased with the knowledge and professionalism of Joel and Craig, and, of course, we’re very pleased with the windows and how nice they look. We definitely recommend Renewal by Andersen."
