Why and How You Should Avoid Frost on Windows

Ever wake up one cold, winter morning to see a film of ice covering the glass on your windows? That’s called frost, and it’s something that you should get rid of or prevent from occurring because no matter how beautiful it might look, it will hinder your view of what’s outside and might also damage your windows.

Why And How You Should Avoid Frost On Windows

What Is Frost?

Frost is the result of indoor moisture freezing due to cold outdoors. This forms when the water vapor inside the room is drawn into windows that are exposed to very low outdoor temperature. When that temperature lowers past the dew point, the water vapor turns into liquid, which then freezes due to the cold.

When the solidified water vapor freezes into ice crystals, it becomes the frost that covers the glass panes on your windows.

Why Should I Remove It and Prevent It From Happening?

Frost, regardless of how it looks like, is still water but only in solid form. It will melt when the temperature rises, and will cause damage depending on the material used on your windows. Frost on the glass panes used in some doors can also cause damage. While frost is not as common as it used to be thanks to advancements in window technology, it can still form on some windows, especially those in older homes.

Preventing Frost

  • Minimize indoor air moisture

Since frost is formed using the moisture found in the air inside the room, it simply makes sense to reduce indoor air humidity using a dehumidifier.

  • Weatherize windows

Make sure to check if your storm windows are in great shape and installed properly. Also, make sure to caulk any gaps in the windows.

  • Keep your home warm

Frost won’t form on your windows if your rooms are warm enough. A space heater might help you with this, especially in rooms where frost normally forms.

  • Use double-paned windows

Double-paned windows are better than single-paned windows when it comes to resisting frost. The space between the panes is filled with gas, which effectively slows or prevents the transfer of heat or cold. Consider using double-paned replacement windows on your next home remodeling project.

"We recently contracted with Renewal by Andersen to replace 5 windows in our home. First of all, we were very delighted that the time from contract to installation was less than two months. Joel and Craig arrived precisely at the agreed-upon time and spent less than four hours from start to completion of installation, including time to demonstrate opening/closing the windows and any questions we had. We were very pleased with the knowledge and professionalism of Joel and Craig, and, of course, we’re very pleased with the windows and how nice they look. We definitely recommend Renewal by Andersen."
